Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - With three regulars and their head coach absent, the Youngstown Phantoms struggled Friday night against the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Phantoms surrendered three goals in each of the first two periods en route to a 6-1 loss during Pink in the Rink Night at the Covelli Centre.
Luke Stork scored the lone goal for Youngstown (4-8-1, 9 points), which fell to 0-6-2 all-time vs. Sioux Falls (8-4-1, 17 points). Goaltender Sean Romeo surrendered three goals on 10 shots in the first period and was replaced by Colin DeAugustine for the remainder of regulation. The teams will face off again tomorrow night at the Covelli Centre.
"That's one of positives. Any time you're on the losing end like tonight, you want to get right back at it," said assistant coach Brad Patterson. He teamed up with Michael Zucker to fill in for head coach Anthony Noreen, who traveled with leading scorer Kyle Connor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to represent Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge.
"You don't want to wait a week before it happens so we're looking forward to tomorrow night. We're confident the guys will respond."
Forwards Alfred Larsson and Kiefer Sherwood also missed the game sidelined with injuries, which gave affiliate forwards Kevin Conley and Anthony Siderio the chance to make their USHL debuts. The Youngsters impressed recording a pair of shots apiece and playing heavy minutes toward the end of the game.
"Our two affiliate players coming in - Siderio and Conely - were terrific," Patterson said. "Maybe they should've played a bit more - and they did play a bit more than some of our guys."
Stork echoed Patterson's sentiment.
"They were probably two of our best players on the ice," he said. "Everything the coaches asked them to do, they did it."
The Stampede scored their first pair of goals in a span of 21 seconds in the opening period. Michael Buonincontri beat Romeo on a 2-on-0 and Tony Calderone picked up his fifth of the season the following shift to make it 2-0 just 3:26 into the game.
Sioux Falls captain Ed McGovern scored a flukey goal with 23 second remaining in the period when he fired a slap shot that hit a Phantoms defenseman and changed directions to beat Romeo. Bo Pellah added a power-play goal 11 minutes into the second period, with DeAugustine between the pipes. It was just the second power-play goal Youngstown had surrendered in the past 30 chances.
Stork finally got the Phantoms on the board two minutes later on their own man-advantage. Truman Reed found the Pittsburgh native at the right circle and he fired a wrist shot bar-down for his third goal in the past three games and seventh of the season.
"I was settling the puck and looked up and saw I had some time so I figured I'd walk it in a bit," Stork said. "I let the shot go and it went in."
But things came unraveled shortly after as Stampede got a pair of goals Dakota Joshua and Connor Valesano in the final two minutes of the period to get a five-goal cushion.
