One Plus One Equals Three in Cedar Rapids Win

Indiana Ice News Release

This one just did not add up. The Indiana Ice held the visiting Cedar Rapid RoughRiders to five shots in the first period-four shots in the second period-and three in the third period. They outshot the RoughRiders 39-12 in regulation.

On paper this looks like a win. Despite the disparity, they had to settle for a point in a 3-2 overtime loss Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse after the visitor's Dylan Steman scored the game-winner 3:56 in the extra session.

Had it not been for a pair of third period goals, Indy would have walked away with a puzzling loss.

Brian Pinho finally got the hosts on the board after spotting Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead heading to second intermission. While the team was shorthanded, Pinho was a one-man scrum in front of the visitor net when he jammed home his third goal of the season 5:29 into the final stanza.

"The goal was pretty hard work. I kept jamming at it and it went in on the third or fourth whack," said Pinho about his unassisted score. "We pretty much dominated the second and third periods. We spent a lot of time in their defensive zone."

With their goaltender Jason Pawloski pulled in lieu of an extra skater, Jake Cass sent the game into overtime with a wrister which beat RoughRider goaltender Danny Tirone 15 seconds before the end of regulation.

"We would have loved to get a win and we really should have won," Cass commented after being assisted by Pinho and Aidan Muir. "Muir got it out to me and I really could not see the net. It just went in."

The visitors scored a single goal in both the first and second period.

Andrew Poturalski scored 4:09 after the opening faceoff while skating with the man advantage. Poturaslski had a wide open net on a rebound of a Jason Kalinowski's shot.

Jack Rowe's score at 18:15 of the second period set the stage for the home team's comeback.

The Indiana Ice skated into Bankers Life Fieldhouse Friday evening with a patchwork roster. The team had four players out with injuries, one player suspended, and their star defenseman Joshua Jacobs was representing Team USA at the World Jr. A Challenge in Nova Scotia.
