Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In the second of five head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season, the Omaha Lancers were blanked on five power-play chances in a tight-checking 3-2 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers at Ralston Arena on Friday, the Lancers' first loss at home in the 2013-14 USHL regular season. With the defeat, Omaha fell to 9-2-1 overall this season, but with 19 points, the Lancers remain alone atop the USHL's Western Conference standings.
Leading USHL scorer and future Nebraska-Omaha Maverick Jake Randolph got the scoring started for Omaha at 5:07 of the opening frame when the Duluth, Minnesota native wired home his sixth goal of the season from the high slot, a light-speed release assisted by Nash Worden and Jimmy Schuldt. After Joe Snively leveled the score for Sioux City early in the second and Musketeers captain Trevor Olson put the visiting Muskies up 2-1 at 16:57, rookie Lancers centerman Tyler Vesel beat the buzzer with his team-leading tenth goal of the season at 19:39 on an inspired, falling-down, two-on-one feed from Randolph with Gage Hough picking up the play's secondary assist.
With the game tied at two entering the third, Omaha and Sioux City traded scoring chances all period, but in the wake of an improperly-assessed too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty, Brandon Hawkins scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season, fourth head-to-head and second game-winning score vs. the Lancers this year at 14:34 on feeds from Cedric Lacroix and Kyle Schmidt to lift the Musketeers to victory. Through two of five games in the season series, Omaha is now 0-1-1 vs. the Musketeers this year.
Next up for the Lancers, it's the first of eight head-to-head meetings in 2013-14 vs. their arch-rival Lincoln Stars, Saturday at 7:05 pm at Ralston Arena. Full coverage of Saturday's game begins at 6:50 pm with the "Valpak Pregame Show" on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL.
