Idaho Stampede News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Mildon Ambres came off the bench to score 16 points to go with 10 rebounds as the Idaho Stampede defeated the Utah Flash 104-96 in Boise on Saturday night. The Stampede re-gain sole possession of first place in the West Division with the win.
The Stampede jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter. Luke Jackson led the surge, scoring 15 of his 24 points in the quarter.
Utah battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Stampede 31-24 and managed to go into halftime losing 51-56, after being down by as many as 17 points.
The two teams exchanged baskets to start the second half and the Flash took a 67-66 lead, their first since the opening minute of the game, on a Bennet Davis lay-up with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter. The Stampede responded, led by Ambres who scored eight of his 16 points in the last five minutes of the quarter, helping Idaho go into the fourth quarter with a 78-74 lead, a lead the Stampede would not give up in the final quarter.
"I am really happy with the effort our guys put in tonight," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "This is going to be an exciting second half of the season. If you can't get excited about Stampede basketball in March and April, you need to check your pulse."
The Stampede benefited from pin-point shooting -going 50 percent (34-of-67) from the floor for the game and shooting close to 45 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the three-point line.
Utah guard Dontell Jefferson led all scorers in the game, scoring 29 points. Ronald DuPree recorded 19 points and eight rebounds, while Carlos Wheeler added 14 points off the bench.
