Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs closed out a 3-in-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, looking to equal the team's longest win streak of the season at 7 and win their 14th of 15 games against their QEW rivals in Niagara.
The Bulldogs entirely controlled the opening frame against the shorthanded IceDogs, striking early and often, Logan Morrison got the game started cashing an Avery Hayes feed in the slot for this 23rd of the season at 3:28 giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The flood gates opened at 11:46 as Gavin White recorded his 7th of the season off a shot from the high slot set by Morrison and Hayes. Under a minute later it looked like an instant replay as Colton Kammerer recorded his 2nd of the season from almost the exact spot White had just scored from, Kammerer's set off a tremendous right corner feed from Patrick Thomas and Ryan Winterton at 12:31. Just 24 seconds later Braeden O'Keefe dogged back check caused a Niagara turnover, Cole Brown carried the puck off the right side, setting Giordano Biondi who danced Costanzo for his 2nd as a Bulldogs & 6th of the season at 12:55 making it 4-0 Hamilton. The Bulldogs weren't finished in the opening frame yet, Avery Hayes set the puck off the right wing side to Logan Morrison, looking for the give and go in front, Morrison's pass trickled through the goal-mouth where Ryan Humphrey potted his 16th of the year at 15:29 while Hayes picked up his 100th career OHL point with the assist. The Bulldogs finished the first period up 5-0, out shooting the IceDogs 19-7.
The second period was more of the same, Arber Xhekaj got the scoring going at 3:53 throwing the puck to the right wing corner, winning a battle of strength, stepping out front and lifting the puck over Josh Rosenzweig who had entered the Niagara net for his 10th of the year, Brown & Kammerer each garnering an assist. After a couple strong PK's including a great left to right pad save from Matteo Drobac, Patrick Thomas would collect the puck on the left wing side and sent Mason McTavish & Ryan Winterton away on a 2-on-1 with McTavish feeding Winterton for a move to the backhand and his 12th of the year at 10:44.
Before the period was out Nathan Staios exited the zone to Logan Morrison, feeding the puck left for McTavish to rip a shot into the Niagara net at 19:06, giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead through 40 minutes.
The Bulldogs would see history made in the third period as Ryan Winterton recorded his 13th of the season and 2nd of the game at 4:20 from Nathan Staios & Gavin White, the assist tied Staios with Kade Landry for the Bulldogs single season defensive scoring record at 51 points. The IceDogs got on the board, spoiling Drobac's shutout bid at 7:13 as Andrew Wysick hit the back of the net. History came at 9:37 as Nathan Staios started the play off the left to Lawson Sherk, finding George Diaco for the goal.
Staios' assist gave him the new Bulldogs single season defensive scoring record at 52 and counting.
Daniel Michaud would add one more for Niagara at 15:12 to make it a 10-2 final with Matteo Drobac running his record to 13-1 stopping 29 of 31 in the win.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return home on Thursday, March 3rd to face-off with the Mississauga Steelheads, with top spot in the Eastern Conference on the line at 7:00pm.
