Erie Upsets #2 Flint in Offensive Showing, 7-3 Win
February 27, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
Flint, Michigan - After an emotional and gutty win on the road in Saginaw on Saturday night, the Erie Otters took the trip south on I-75 to Flint, looking for their first win of the season against the Firebirds. Nolan Lalonde, who had his first-career Ontario Hockey League shutout on Saturday night, would get the nod in net yet again. Flint would go with Nathaniel Day in net, who the Otters have not faced since preseason.
The Otters would come out of the gate doing what worked well for them in Saginaw - controlling the puck and pace of play. The Firebirds weren't granted much time in the first period to get set up or going in their offensive end. On the opposing side, Erie was able to get a number of legitimate opportunities that were stopped by Day. Brendan Sellan and Carey Terrance would lead the way with five shots between them, but that's as heavy as the action would get in the first with a clean sheet in the penalties column, and nothing in the goals column, 0-0. Erie would lead in shots, 11-7.
After a shutout first period, the second period would be anything but. In the first 13 minutes, Erie would explode for four goals - three of which were even-strength. Just :89 into the second, Noah Sedore (11) would open the scoring for either side, with Brett Bressette and Connor Lockhart assisting. At the 5:24 mark of the period, Spencer Sova (6) would thread the needle on a shot to make it 2-0, and a minute later Carey Terrance (5) would roof one on a backhand to put Erie up 3-0. After a few minutes with no change, the Otters would strike yet again - this time on the power play - from a tenacious Connor Lockhart (18) to jump up to 4-0. With 4:10 left, the Firebirds would finally strike from Dmitry Kuzmin (9) to make it 4-1 a game after 40 in favor of Erie, leading in shots 20-18.
Nothing comes easy, and for the Otters, they would have to continue to weather the storm of the pesky Firebirds, who refused to concede the loss. Halfway into the third, Dmitry Kuzmin (10) would net his second of the night, and make it a two-goal game. Erie would respond minutes later with back-to-back goals from Daniel D'Amato (16,17), with an Elias Cohen (20) empty-netter being the final bookend after a Tyler Deline (4) goal. Erie would pull off the massive upset the #1 team in the OHL West 7-3, and win their first game in 11 efforts against the Firebirds.
Erie finally gets an extended rest, not playing again until Friday and Saturday on home ice. Those games will be against the same opponent as today, the Flint Firebirds. The two weekend games will be the first of five-straight on home ice for the Erie Otters, as the team has just limited time spent on the road ahead.
