St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Mike Meyer had waited long enough. The righthander went seven strong innings to earn his 24th victory in a St. Paul uniform - tying him with Minnetonka native Jake Whitney for the most wins by a St. Paul pitcher - as the Saints won their fourth game in five tries, 6-2, over Sioux City before a sellout crowd of 6,304 at Midway Stadium.
In his fourth try to tie Whitney (who played here from 2001-04), Meyer allowed only a two-run homer to Jorge Moreno in the first inning as he evened his 2006 record at 8-8. St. Paul evened their second half mark at 17-17 and improved to 46-36 overall.
Brian Buchanan, Brian Sprout and Jose Torres homered for St. Paul, which improved to 29-12 at Midway Stadium this season. Spring Lake Park resident Chris Swiatkewicz (0-2) went seven innings and took the loss for Sioux City.
Moreno's homer tied him with St. Joe's Wil Quintana for the league lead with 18 to give the Explorers the early lead. Buchanan tied the game in the second inning with his ninth homer, a line drive over the center field fence. Pat Scalabrini's two-RBI double in the fourth broke the tie for good at 4-2. Sprout hit his ninth homer in the sixth and Torres added his second since joining the saint sin June in the eighth to finish off the scoring.
Meyer, with late help from Ivan Hernandez and Matt Hammons, did the rest. He walked one and fanned one to help the Saints to their 15th victory in 22 games against the Explorers this season.
The series concludes Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Each team's top winner is scheduled to work. Sioux City lefty Billy Keppinger (9-4) leads the league in Complete Games with five. Justin Lord (10-2) has earned three of his victories against the Explorers this season.
