Canaries lose third straight, 5-2

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-19) were defeated, 5-2, in the middle game of the series with the Fort Worth Cats (23-11) on Saturday at the Birdcage.

The Canaries took their only lead in the game in the first inning. Ralph Santana singled and stole second base. The steal was one of two in the game for Santana, who now has 30 stolen bases on the season, his sixth straight season with 30 or more steals. Abner Arroyo drove in Santana with a single to put the Canaries ahead, 1-0.

The Cats tied it up 1-1 in the second when Jordan Foster got a solo home run, his ninth of the season.

Fort Worth took the lead in the fourth. Shawn Williams drew a lead off walk and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Williams scored on a double by Justin Hatcher, putting Fort Worth ahead 2-1. An error by shortstop Angelo Fermin allowed Hatcher to score for a 3-1 lead.

The Cats added one more in the sixth. Kris Zacuto singled and scored on a single by Kip Harkrider, extending the Cats lead over the Canaries to 4-1.

With two outs in the seventh, John Schmitz got on after an error by first baseman Shawn Williams. Schmitz moved to third on a single by Chris Hall and scored on a single by David Hoffman to bring the Canaries within a pair, 4-2.

Fort Worth got the run back in the eighth. Kris Zacuto drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Justin Hatcher. Jason Von Behren came into pinch run for Zacuto and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, Von Behren scored on a sacrifice fly by Kip Harkrider for the 5-2 final.

Kevin Hull (7-3) got the win for Fort Worth. Hull pitched 7 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. Tony Cogan (7-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits in six innings of work for the Canaries.

The Canaries will host the Fort Worth Cats again tomorrow night for the series finale. Tomorrow night Tradewinds Press and Dairy Queen will sponsor a fireworks show following the game.
