St. John's Maple Leafs Announce Year End Award Winners

Earlier this evening in a pregame ceremony the St. John's Maple Leafs announced the club's Year End Award Winners for the 2003-04 season. This year's edition of the St. John's Maple Leafs Year End Awards had 9 players sharing 13 separate awards.

Here are the winners for the 2003-04 season as selected by the St. John's Maple Leafs with the help of their Fans and the Local Media:

MOLSON CANADIAN PLUS/MINUS: Pierre Hedin
OVERALL MOLSON CUP WINNER: Harold Druken

During the St. John's Maple Leafs 2003-04 season there were many individual and team records tied or set throughout the year. Here is a list of this past season's highlights:

Ø The St. John's Maple Leafs had seven players with 15 or more goals and 12 players with 20 or more points in a season.

Ø The Maple Leafs had eight players with 100 or more penalty minutes in a season.

Ø The Maple Leafs set a team record with five goals in a period set back on March 27 against the Syracuse Crunch. The team scored five goals in the third period and went on to win the game 7-6 in OT.

Ø The St. John's Maple Leafs had three players selected to the 2004 AHL All-Star Game in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Defencemen Carlo Colaiacovo and Pierre Hedin and center Kyle Wellwood were all chosen for the event. Colaiacovo was injured prior to the All-Star game and did not play.

Ø Center Aaron Gavey led the Maple Leafs in scoring with 67 points (22G,45A). Gavey had a career year in total points (67) and assists (45).


Ø Center Kyle Wellwood was amongst the AHL rookie scoring leaders all season. Wellwood finished the season tied for 2nd on the Maple Leafs in scoring with 55 points (20G, 35A).

Ø Rookie Carlo Colaiacovo led all Maple Leafs defenceman in points (31) and assists (25).

Ø Rookie Robb Palahnuk led all AHL rookies in total shorthanded points (5).

Ø Center Nathan Barrett had career numbers in goals (17) and points (38) in a season.

Ø Defenceman Jay Harrison set career totals in goals (4) and penalty minutes (141) in a season.

Ø Newfoundland native Harold Druken set career highs in goals (26) and assists (25) in a season. Druken finished 4th in team scoring with 51 points.

Ø Forward Josh Holden set a career high for total points (55) and assists (33) in a season. Holden finished tied for 2nd on the Maple Leafs with 55 points.

Ø This is the 11th time in 13 seasons that the team has recorded 30 or more wins.

Ø Six St. John's Maple Leaf players made their debuts this season and recorded their first professional goal while one player recorded their first AHL win. The first year crop is listed in order of when they scored their first professional goal:

Brendan Bell November 2 @ Toronto, 6-4 win
Kris Newbury October 11 @ Manitoba, 5-4 win
Ben Ondrus November 7 @ Hamilton, 5-4 loss
Kyle Wellwood October 11 @ Manitoba, 5-4 win
Scott May April 9 vs Toronto, 4-2 win

First Pro Win:
J.F. Racine March 16 vs Rochester, 4-2 win
