Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, tied the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-2 on the road Sunday in their final game of the 2003-04 regular season. The teams will now face one another in the best-of-seven East Division Semifinals starting this Thursday, April 15th and Saturday, April 17th at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard.
After failing to score in 65 minutes of play, including all of their eight power plays, in Saturday's scoreless tie at home versus the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Sound Tigers took the first lead of Sunday's game when Jeff Hamilton notched his League-leading 43rd goal of the season, his 20th on the advantage, 58 seconds into the first period and just 17 seconds into the first power play of the contest off assists from Ryan Kraft and Martin Kariya.
The Sound Tigers then had their franchise-record shutout streak snapped at 204:45 when former teammate Alain Nasreddine scored his second goal of the year, his first with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, at the 4:55 mark of the opening frame off assists from Kris Beech and Tom Kostopoulos to tie the score at 1-1. However, the Sound Tigers regained the lead with another power-play goal as Cole Jarrett one-timed a shot past Penguins Goaltender Sebastien Caron for his second marker of the year off an assist from Randy Perry with 8:26 left in the first period. The helper was Perry ¬â¢s first point as a Sound Tiger in his debut with the team.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the game at 2-2 11:30 into the middle period on a pretty play as Konstantin Koltsov fed Toby Petersen who spun around in the right circle and slipped the puck to the trailing Patrick Boileau who then fired it past Sound Tigers Netminder Dieter Kochan for his sixth goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score in the third period or the extra session. The Penguins had a 39-23 shots on goal advantage, but the Sound Tiger outshot them 5-1 in overtime. The Sound Tigers were 2 for 4 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.
Boileau was the first star of the game, Kochan the second with 37 saves, and Nasreddine the third. Caron made 21 saves.
