Milwaukee wins AHL's Kilpatrick Trophy
April 11, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The Milwaukee Admirals have won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the American Hockey League's 2003-04 regular season points champion. The Admirals clinched first place overall with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Wolves on Saturday night.
The Admirals finished the regular season with a record of 46-24-7-3, good for 102 points. The West Division champions will have home-ice advantage throughout the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs, which begin next week.
As the top development team for the Nashville Predators, the Admirals benefited from a balance of top prospects and skilled veterans. AHL All-Rookie selection Timofei Shishkanov, Brian Finley, Scottie Upshall, Darren Haydar, Greg Zanon and Simon Gamache are among some of the most talented young players in the league, while defensemen Brad Tiley, Ray Schultz and Eddie Shore Award winner Curtis Murphy, forwards Mathieu Darche and Tony Hrkac and goaltender Wade Flaherty have provided the experience needed to keep Milwaukee among the elite teams in the league. The Admirals' ship is steered by Louis A.R. Pieri Award-winning head coach Claude Noel and assistant Todd Richards.
The Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy, which was instituted in 1997, honors the late Macgregor Kilpatrick, a member of the AHL Board of Governors for 27 years. Kilpatrick also served as the AHL's senior vice president and general counsel during his tenure, and earned the James C. Hendy Award in 1976 as the league's outstanding executive.
Now in its 68th season, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 80 percent of all players to compete in the NHL this season have been AHL graduates, and over 400 players have taken the ice in both leagues in 2003-04.
The Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs get underway on Wednesday, with 20 teams vying for the honor of capturing the league's coveted championship trophy.
