Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Solid pitching and two unearned runs were enough to carry the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a 2-1 win over the Reading Phillies in front of 7,693 on Friday night at The Diamond.

Squirrels' starter David Mixon was in control early in the ballgame, retiring the first 11 R-Phils that he faced. Ultimately, he worked six innings for his first win of the season. The righty allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out four.

An inning-opening error on Reading third baseman Keoni DeRenne triggered a two-run inning for Richmond in the third. Skyler Stromsmoe reached on the miscue and two batters later, Conor Gillaspie singled off Reading starter Yohan Flande to bring him in. Roger Kieschnick followed with an RBI triple to plate Gillaspie and Richmond led after three innings, 2-0. Kieschnick's triple marked the first in Flying Squirrels' franchise history.

A lead-off walk issued by Mixon led to the only Reading run in the sixth inning. Tyson Gillies was passed to open the frame, and came around two batters later courtesy of an RBI double to the alley in right-center field from Tagg Bozied.

The Flying Squirrels' bullpen was charged with protecting the one-run lead over the final three innings. Left-hander Andy Sisco did his part, working a scoreless inning in the seventh. Tony Pena Jr. then fired the final two frames to earn his first save of the season. Reading did threaten in the ninth as they had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position when a diving stop by second baseman Nick Noonan robbed a hit from Brian Stavisky and secured the ballgame for Richmond.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Saturday night at The Diamond. LHP Craig Clark (0-1, 6.75) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Drew Naylor (1-0, 4.50) for Reading.
