Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Naturals first game of the seven-game road trip included five lead-changes, two ties and a walk-off loss at Hammons Field on Thursday night against the Springfield Cardinals. Leading 11-10 with one out in the last of the ninth, Springfield infielder, Irving Lopez drilled a two-run home run well beyond the rightfield wall to push the Cardinals ahead, for good, 12-11.
Northwest Arkansas (4-4) took the lead in the top of the ninth inning with a one-out base-hit by Taylor Featherston and added to the advantage after DJ Burt's RBI single plated Featherston from third base, hoping the 11-9 margin would be enough. But Springfield (1-7) used a lead-off single, two Naturals' errors and a walk-off homer to prevail, snapping the club's longest losing streak to begin the season.
The Naturals cut into the Cardinals 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Gabriel Cancel, his first of the season, and took the lead with a three-run fifth inning 5-4. Travis Jones, pulled Northwest Arkansas within a run in the fifth frame with a sharp single up the middle and Samir Duenez plated two runs later in the inning to gain the first lead of the contest.
After the Cardinals took a 6-5 lead on a solo home run by Kramer Robertson a half inning later, Featherston whacked his first homer of the season to centerfield to knot the score, again, at 6-6.
The two clubs traded a trio of runs in the last of the seventh and in the top of the eight. Northwest Arkansas capitalized on three walks and a hit batsman in the eighth frame to make it a 9-9 score, the second tie of the game.
Starter, Gerson Garabito worked the first three innings and allowed four runs to score for the Cardinals on six hits while the Naturals tagged Springfield starter, Evan Kruczynski for six runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings.
Relievers, Grant Gavin, Walker Sheller and Andrew Beckwith combined to bridge the middle frames with Gavin tossing three innings and Sheller and Beckwith each pitching one. Yunior Marte (0-2, 6.23 ERA) is saddled with his second defeat of the season.
Northwest Arkansas pounded out 15 hits including a season-high six extra-base hits and batted 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The Naturals are hitting .421 with runners in scoring position against the Cardinals this year.
The Naturals look to snap the club's four-game losing streak in the second game of the four-game series against Springfield on Friday, April 12 at Hammons Field. Right-hander, Ofreidy Gomez (0-0, 5.79 ERA) makes his second start of the season against right-hander, Harold Arauz (0-0, 4.05 ERA) for the Cardinals.
