Arkansas Travelers News Release

Hammons Field, Springfield, MO - In his first game at Hammons Field, RF Terry Evans belted two home runs and drove in seven leading the Springfield Cardinals (34-26) to a 9-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (21-40). Called up from Class A Palm Beach on Friday, Evans tied Springfield's franchise single-game RBI record and finished 4-for-4. The Cardinals rallied for five runs in the sixth inning against Travs starter LHP Daniel Davidson (1-6) to take a 7-0 lead. Davidson worked 5.2 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits and a season-high five walks. Springfield RHP Jordan Pals (5-1) pitched shutout ball until the seventh inning, but Arkansas 1B Greg Porter (7), RF Matt Pali (5) and CF Devin Day (1) all hit solo home runs to knock him out of the game. Pals was knocked out of the game in the seventh, but went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits, no walks and three strikeouts. The three solo home runs in the seventh inning ended the Travs' 22-inning streak without a run.

The Cards jumped on Davidson early with Rayner Laya leading off the first with a signle to right field. Reid Gorecki followed with a smash inside the third-base line moving Laya to third base. After striking out Juan Richardson, Davidson walked Rico Washington to load the bases for Evans. On a 3-2 count, Evans hit a blooper over Porter's head into right field to score two runs. Davidson got out of the inning by getting Nick Stavinoha to ground into a double play.

Davidson would toss four shutout innings inducing two more double plays, while Pals held the Travs to just four hits over six innings.

The Cards' big sixth inning started with Davidson striking out Gorecki on three pitches. The next five Springfield batters reached base starting with a walk to Richardson. Washington doubled to right field moving Richardson to third base. Evans then smacked a first-pitch home run to right field for a 5-0 lead. Davidson walked the next two batters, but got a fly out to right field. After getting ahead of Mike McCoy 1-2, Davidson left an off-speed pitch up-in-the-zone and McCoy stroked an RBI single to center field to give Springfield a 6-0 lead. Laya then knocked Davidson out of the game with a single to center to load the bases. RHP Aaron Pullin relieved and hit Gorecki to force in another run for a 7-0 Cardinals lead.

Porter began the top of the seventh with a monster home run to right field. After Pals got two outs, Pali went deep to right field and Day followed with a blast to left to cut Springfield's lead to 7-3.

Evans wasn't finished though as he followed Washington's seventh-inning leadoff single with another first-pitch home run to right for a 9-3 Cards lead.

The Travs tallied the last run of the game on Bobby Wilson's double off RHP Justin Garza in the eighth.

Time of game was 2:28 and the paid attendance was 8,341.

The second game of this five-game series is set for Sunday afternoon. Arkansas has RHP Rafael Rodriguez (2-4, 8.60 ERA) pitching against Springfield RHP Chris Lambert (4-5, 5.49 ERA). First pitch at Hammons Field is set for 2:10 p.m.
