Colina's hit beats Wichita

Tulsa Drillers News Release

Alvin Colina's two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Tulsa Drillers rallied to defeat the Wichita Wranglers 3-2 Saturday night at Drillers Stadium. The win was the third in a row for the first-place Drillers and kept them three games in front of second-place Springfield in the North Division standings. With eight games remaining in the first-half of the season, Tulsa's magic number for clinching the title is now six.

The Drillers fell behind 2-0 on Saturday as the Wranglers scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. After Billy Butler and Dee Brown singled in the fourth, Brett Groves doubled home Butler with the game's first run.

In the fifth, Kila Kaaihue doubled and scored on a ground out by Matt Tupman.

Tulsa tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. A walk to Colina and two-out singles by Matt Macri and Jud Thigpen loaded the bases for Troy Tulowitzki. The Drillers shortstop delivered a line drive single over the head of the shortstop to make it 2-2.

It remained tied until Colina's big hit in the bottom of the eighth. Wichita reliever Nate Hoelscher took over for starter Neal Musser to begin the eighth and hit the inning's leadoff hitter, Joe Gaetti, with a pitch. After Gaetti was retired at second on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Ian Stewart, Joe Koshansky hit a ground ball to second. Stewart was forced at second on the play, but the throw from shortstop Angel Sanchez to first base was wild, allowing Koshansky to advance to second. Thad Markray then replaced Hoelscher and was met with Colina's single into center field that scored Koshansky with the go-ahead run.

Manuel Corpas allowed a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning but retired the next three hitters to record his league-leading 18th save of the year.

Josh Newman gained the win with 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings to improve his record to 4-1. Starter Enmanuel Ulloa worked 6 2/3 innings, surrendering the two runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

Tulsa was out-hit in the game 9-7. Jud Thigpen was the only Drillers player with more than one hit, finishing 2-3.

Steven Register (1-4, 4.87 ERA) will pitch Sunday in game two of the five-game series with Wichita. Junior Herndon (4-3, 5.05 ERA) will pitch for the Wranglers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05PM.
