Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The Corpus Christi Hooks are one step closer to clinching a playoff spot after topping the San Antonio Missions 8-3 Saturday night at Whataburger Field. The Hooks (36-25) lead the Texas League South by 4½ games over both Midland (32-30) and Frisco (32-30), reducing their magic number for securing a first half title down to four.
The Hooks kept their hot bats alive, scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings against the Missions. Seven of the eight runs were scored against Missions' starter Adam Pettyjohn (1-4), who allowed nine hits and a walk during his four innings of work.
Shortstop Ben Zobrist and first baseman J.R. House led a balanced Hooks' attack. Zobrist went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, while House had a 2-for-4 night that included two RBI's. For Zobrist, the RBI's were his first since May 22nd, ending a 15-game RBI drought. House has now hit safely in six straight and in 23 of his last 24 games.
Center fielder Josh Anderson chipped in with two runs, two hits and an RBI, while left fielder Jorge Cortes collected three hits and a run. Anderson now has 25 RBI's this season, just one shy of his total for all of last year. Cortes extended his current streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 32. Designated hitter Josh Bonifay poked a solo homer in the third, giving him 11 on the season. Every Hooks' starting position player had at least one hit or one RBI in Saturday's game.
Hooks' starter Juan Gutierrez worked 5.2 innings of shutout baseball en route to the win. Gutierrez (6-3) scattered seven hits while walking four and striking out eight. Gutierrez has not allowed a run in three of his last four starts, and is 4-1 over his last six starts with a 1.16 ERA.
Game two of the five-game set is slated for Sunday night with a 7:05 first pitch. Seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens (13-8, 1.87 w/Houston in 2005) will take the mound for the Hooks in his second of three stops in the minors before rejoining the Astros. The Missions counter with LHP Travis Blackley (5-4, 3.80). The first 1,500 kids 12 and under will receive Sammy Seagull Bobbleheads compliments of Landlord Resources.
