Springfield Cardinals News Release

Making just his second start at the Double-A level, Springfield right fielder Terry Evans, in his Hammons Field debut, had four hits and tied a franchise record, as the Cards knocked off Arkansas by a final score of 9-4 on Saturday evening at Hammons Field.

Evans, who went 0-4 with a sac fly on Friday in Wichita, had a two-run single in the first, a three-run homer in the sixth and another two-run home run in the seventh. The seven RBIs equals a franchise record set by Rico Washington in Tulsa on April 11th, earlier this year. The two-homer, seven-RBI game is the second for Evans this year, ironically doing it on the same day as Rico Washington. Evans had three hits and seven RBIs for the Palm Beach Cardinals on April 11th at Brevard County.

Evans' two-run single in the first inning put the Cards on the board against Arkansas starter Daniel Davidson (1-6), who was rocked for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.

That was all the scoring until the sixth, when Evans delivered his first career homer in Double-A, and 16th of the year, making it 5-0. Mike McCoy drove in a run with an RBI single and Reid Gorecki was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Cards a 7-0 lead after six innings.

Jordan Pals (5-1) was nearly flawless for the first six innings, dominating until the seventh. Pals surrendered three solo home runs in the seventh inning though, as Greg Porter, Matt Pali and Devin Day all went deep, making it 7-3. Pals was later removed, after he was unable to get the last out of the seventh. The right-hander went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits in earning the win.

Springfield got two more in the seventh, making it 9-3, as Evans delivered again. His last hit of the game was a two-run shot to right-center field, capping a 4-4 game.

Arkansas rounded out the scoring by tallying a run in the eighth against Justin Garza, as Bobby Wilson delivered an RBI double. Cory Doyne worked a scoreless ninth, getting Eric Rodland to ground into a game-ending double play.

With the win, the Cards are now 2.5 games behind the Tulsa Drillers, pending the outcome of the Tulsa / Wichita game on Saturday night. The Redbirds continue their nine-game home stand on Sunday afternoon, sending Chris Lambert (4-5) to the mound, while Arkansas will counter with Rafael Rodriguez (2-4). On Sunday afternoon, kids 12 and under can score a share of $5,000 Cardinals dollars thanks to Great Southern. Three different age groups of kids will collect a total of $5,000 on the field after the game. Kids will also get free ice cream before the game thanks to Hiland Dairy, and then run the bases after the game, thanks to the Killian Group of Companies. Fans are also encouraged to bring a canned food item or cash donation, in support of the "Strike Out Hunger" Program, sponsored by American Family Insurance and Ozarks Food Harvest. Game time on Sunday is 2:10pm. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
