Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers hammered the Springfield Cardinals for their second straight win at Hammons Field, defeating the Cards by a score of 12-3 on Wednesday night.

Mark Trumbo homered and drove in a team-high four runs, while Tim Kiely turned in seven strong innings for his fourth win of the year.

Peter Bourjos homered to lead off the game, giving the Travs the early lead over Cards' starter Ryan Kulik at 1-0.

Kulik gave up an unearned run in the second and three more unearned runs in the third, on a Jay Caligiuri three-run blast, taking a 5-0 lead in the third. Nate Sutton's RBI double put the Cards in a 6-0 hole in the fourth.

Kiely was cruising along until he walked back-to-back hitters to open the fifth. Despite going hitless in the inning, the Cards got RBI force-outs from both Antone DeJesus and Jim Rapoport to plate two runs, making it a 6-2 game.

That's as close as the Redbirds would get though, as the Travs got four off of Marco Gonzalez in the sixth, making it a 10-2 game. Trumbo capped the inning with a two-run single off Gonzalez.

Kiely (4-1) left after seven innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits.

A Trumbo homer in the ninth rounded out Arkansas' scoring, as his 12th homer of the year, a two-run blast off of Justin Fiske, made it 12-2.

Springfield would cap the scoring in the last of the ninth, as Aaron Luna's two-out homer to left field made it 12-3 against reliever David Herndon. For Luna, the homer is his ninth of the year and his first since being called up from A-ball.

Kulik (4-8) allowed six runs, two earned, over five innings, suffering the loss.

Springfield (17-21, 55-53) looks to break the two-game skid on Thursday, sending Scott Gorgen (2-3) to the hill against Arkansas' Marco Albano (2-5). On Thursday night, lucky fans will win round-trip airfare, thanks to Allegiant Air. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
