Missions Avert Sweep, Trim Hooks
August 6, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Ernesto Frieri allowed just three hits over seven innings and Craig Cooper knocked in a pair of runs as San Antonio beat Corpus Christi 3-1 Thursday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium, avoiding a series sweep.
The Hooks finished their road trip 4-4 and are now 19-21 in the second half, three games behind front-running Midland in the Texas League South.
Corpus Christi struck first, getting to Frieri in the fourth. Drew Locke drilled a 3-2 pitch high onto the berm in left for his 18th homer of the year and a 1-0 score. Locke now leads the Hooks in home runs and pushed his league-leading RBI total to 101. Locke has five homers and 15 RBI's in the last 11 games.
The Missions were quick to respond in their half of the fourth. Eric Sogard reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Wladimir Sutil to start the frame. Lance Zawadzki followed with a triple into the right-field corner to knot the score at 1. Zawadzki scored on Cooper's grounder to short, putting the Missions ahead 2-1.
San Antonio added an insurance tally in the eighth off reliever Danny Meszaros. Luis Durango singled with one out and moved to third on Sogard's ground-rule double to right-center. Meszaros intentionally walked Zawadzki, loading the bases for Cooper, whose single to left sent Durango home with the game's final run.
Frieri (9-7) walked two and struck out five during his 95-pitch effort. Evan Scribner collected his 19th save despite giving up a ground-rule double to Locke in the ninth.
Hooks starter Wilton Lopez (3-4) was just as impressive as Frieri, holding San Antonio to two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four and threw 89 pitches.
Thursday's crowd of 8,046 was the largest this season at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
The Hooks open a four-game series with Midland at Whataburger Field Friday night at 7:05. Brad James (2-9, 6.82) takes on Graham Godfrey (9-6, 3.84) of the RockHounds.
