Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Andy Van Hekken allowed just one run over seven innings and Drew Locke had four hits and knocked in his 100th run of the season in Corpus Christi's 5-2 win over the Missions Wednesday at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
The result, coupled with Frisco's win at Midland, moves the Hooks (19-20) to within two games of first place in the Texas League South second-half race.
The Hooks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Jhon Florentino walked with one out and scored two batters later when Nick Moresi ripped a double to the gap in left-center. Moresi was out at third trying to stretch his hit to a triple.
Locke and Florentino provided key hits in Corpus Christi's three-run fifth. Wladimir Sutil led off with a single, but Darin Erstad took a called third strike from San Antonio starter Nathan Culp (5-7). With Sutil on the move, Locke blistered a double into the left-field corner, plating Sutil with the game's second run. The RBI was the 100th this season for Locke, making him the first Hook in the team's five-year history to reach the century milestone.
Jason Castro followed with a walk and Drew Meyer reached on a fielder's choice, with Castro getting forced at second and Locke moving to third. Florentino tripled to the gap in left-center to chase Locke and Meyer home to make it 4-0.
Van Hekken (6-4) carried a two-hit shutout into the sixth and allowed a run on four hits heading into the seventh. He walked Logan Forsythe to open the seventh and surrendered a single to Mitch Canham to put men at the corners with nobody out. That set up Van Hekken for his finest moment.
The southpaw fanned Brian Joynt for his first strikeout of the evening. Pinch hitter Anthony Contreras took a called third strike for the second out, and Van Hekken induced a ground ball from Cedric Hunter for a force out to end the threat.
Both clubs notched a run in the eighth. Erstad's two-out double to right-center scored Collin DeLome for a 5-1 Hooks' lead. Seth Johnston answered for the Missions with a sacrifice fly to center to reach the 5-2 final.
Van Hekken was touched for five hits and three walks. He threw 97 pitches. Evan Englebrook worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.
Locke's effort was his fourth four-hit game of the year. He's the sixth player to reach 100 RBI's in the Texas League over the past six seasons.
Moresi added a 3-for-4 night with a double and an RBI, giving him nine hits and five RBI's in the last six games.
Corpus Christi's road trip concludes with a 7:05 start Thursday night. Wilton Lopez (3-3, 5.91) shoots for the series sweep against San Antonio's Ernesto Frieri (8-7, 3.52).
