Springfield Armor News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - After finishing the first quarter down by two, the Springfield Armor (1-5), presented by MGM Springfield, rallied to knock off the Maine Red Claws (4-2) 92-81 for its first win of the 2013-14 season Friday night at the Portland Expo Building.

Forward Marcus Hubbard led the Springfield charge on both the offensive and defensive ends, scoring a season-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, while grabbing 12 boards, 10 on the defensive glass.

The Armor started slow, digging themselves into a nine-point deficit with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, but an 8-0 run over the next two minutes pulled the squad within just one. From there, Springfield played Maine close over the remainder of the period, exiting the first frame trailing by just two at 25-23.

About 1:30 into the second quarter, Hubbard's trey gave the Armor their first lead since taking a 6-5 advantage in the first. The two teams traded leads over the next three minutes, but Springfield was able to put a late run together at the end of the quarter to build a sizeable margin heading into the break. Up by just three at 46-43, the Armor closed out the half on a 6-2 run, capped by a Lance Hurdle jumper with 15 seconds to go, to take a seven point edge into the locker room at 52-45.

The Armor started the second half strong, building their lead as high as 11 with seven minutes left in the third following a pair of free throws by Gary Forbes. Keeping Maine at a distance, Hurdle again beat the buzzer at the end of the period, nailing a three-pointer with just 0.3 seconds on the clock which gave Springfield its largest lead of the night to that point at 75-63 heading into the final frame.

Springfield's lead grew by as much as 19 in the fourth quarter, closing out the final 12 minutes to secure the team's first victory of the season and snap a 10-game losing streak. Hubbard, Hurdle (15 points) and Quinn McDowell (seven points) all tallied season-high marks as the Armor (46.8 percent) out-shot the Red Claws (36.7 percent) on the night. Though Springfield lost the rebounding battle 51-44, the Armor cleaned up on the defensive glass 36-33.

The Armor return home tomorrow night to host the Red Claws at 7:00 p.m. inside the MassMutual Center. During the game, the Armor will be accepting donations toward the Newtown Memorial Fund as well as unwrapped toys for the team's annual Toy Drive benefitting the Baystate Children's Hospital. Fans that donate an unwrapped toy will receive a voucher for a FREE ticket to the Armor's December 21 Season of Giving game against the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
