Schwarz has covered baseball for the past 14 years, working for many of the most respected publications in sports media. He also has written a weekly in-season column for ESPN.com since 2001 and has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times since 1998.

About The Numbers Game

The book's stars are not statistics, but the stories of men (as well as women) obsessed with keeping and studying them for more than 150 years including, Henry Chadwick, the 19th-century evangelist of baseball statistics; military officers of the 1940s and ‘50s who modeled air-force strikes with concepts they gleaned from studying baseball's numbers and Bill James, whose Baseball Abstract series launched a baseball revolution; and dozens more. From the story of Topps baseball cards to the original making of The Baseball Encyclopedia (baseball's Oxford English Dictionary), The Numbers Game paints a history not just of baseball statistics but the soul of the sport itself.
