New Jersey Cardinals News Release

The New Jersey Cardinals announced that pitcher Derek Roper has been promoted to the Peoria Chiefs, the Single-A Midwest League Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Roper had been a stalwart on the mound for the Cards all season, compiling a 6-0 record and a 3.38 ERA in 13 appearances.

During his two year career with the Cardinals, Roper etched his name in the record books several times. On June 19, in his first outing of the 2004 season, he set a NJC record with 13 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 12 held by Rhett Parrott (8/24/01 @ Batavia) and Brian Flynn (8/30/02 vs Brooklyn G1). Then later in the season, he pitched 20.1 consecutive scoreless innings, surpassing the previous high of 19.2 set in 1998 by Scott Prather. In his final outing of the season on August 15 (G2) at Staten Island (New York Yankees), Roper earned his 9th career win, tying him with Scott Cunningham (NJC 94) for the Cardinals career record.

The Cardinals are back in action tonight when they take on the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 pm at Skylands Park. Tonight is Miller Lite Bat Bonanza sponsored by Miller Lite and the New Jersey Herald. Then, tomorrow night, the Cards and Crosscutters finish their 5-game set with a single game beginning at 7:15 pm. Saturday night, the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones pay a visit to Skylands Park as the Cards try to gain ground in the McNamara Division. First pitch is set for 5:00 pm. Friday night is fireworks night sponsored by Condit Toyota, Toyota Motors USA and The Star Ledger. Saturday, Phils Ford sponsors a baseball giveaway and post-game is Family Catch on the Field.
