Game Two
Lakewood 1 West Virginia 12
Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power split a double-header with the Lakewood BlueClaws Sunday afternoon. West Virginia erupted for 12 runs on 12 hits in the second game of the twin bill.
In game one, another pitchers' duel ensued. James Marvel took the ball for the Power in his fourth start of the season. Marvel cruised until he ran into trouble in the fourth. Henri Lartigue doubled to begin the inning and Edgar Cabral followed with a bunt single. With runners on the corners, Marvel induced a sacrifice bunt out that didn't advance the runner home, and struck out both Daniel Brito and Luke Williams to end the inning. Lakewood did score in the fifth inning on a Cord Sandberg sacrifice fly that knocked Marvel out of the game.
After the BlueClaws doubled their lead to 2-0 in the seventh, West Virginia looked to come back in their last ups. With Alexis Bastardo on second, Stephen Alemais lined a double to trade places and get the Power within one, 2-1. But, with the bases loaded and two away, Ty Moore would ground out to third to end the game. West Virginia dropped the first contest 2-1. Marvel (1-1) was dealt the loss while Nick Fanti (1-0) went six innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win.
Game two began in favor of West Virginia. Logan Ratledge singled and came home on a double play. Carlos Munoz, with two outs, saild a fastball over the right field wall for his third home run of the season, this time coming against Lakewood starter Felix Paulino. Power led 2-0 after one.
Oddy Nunez started for West Virginia and only surrendered one run. Brett Barbier grounded out in the third inning, allowing Carlos Duran to come across for the only BlueClaws run of game two. Nunez went on to strike out six batters over four innings.
West Virginia responded right away. In the fourth, Trae Arbet and Chris Harvey grabbed RBI singles. Five runs were plated in the fifth inning capped by a Kevin Mahala two run double. For good measure, the Power touched home three times in the sixth with only one hit. Arbet's single (second hit) would give him three RBI. For the first time in 2017, the Power would score in three consecutive innings at Appalachian Power Park.
Geoff Hartlieb and Dylan Prohoroff closed down the final three innings as West Virginia split the double-header as game two finished with a score of 12-1. Hartlieb (1-0) earned his first win of the season in relief while starter Paulino (1-1) suffered the loss.
The Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees, come to town for a three game set beginning Monday. It's Family Buck Night with great deals on tickets and concessions. All information can be found online or by calling 304-344-BATS.
