RiverDogs Fall Short in Finale, Drop Third Straight to Asheville to Close Homestand
(Charleston RiverDogs)
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Outfielder Estevan Florial went 3 for 4 including cranking his second home run this season but the Charleston RiverDogs dropped their third consecutive game to finish the series against Asheville by a 4-3 final in front of a crowd of 3,715 at Riley Park on Sunday.
Florial's solo blast in the fifth brought the RiverDogs (9-9) within two, and the club would add a single tally in the seventh, but fall short of a comeback for the third consecutive night. All four games of the series were decided by three runs or fewer as Asheville (9-9) walked away on the winning side of the weekend, three games to one.
The RiverDogs got on the board right away in the bottom of the first. Florial doubled into left center field before Blake Rutherford reached on an error by Jose Gomez (SS) that scored Florial to make it 1-0.
That lead would evaporate quickly as Asheville took the lead in the top of the second. With one out, third baseman Tyler Nevin singled into left field. Second baseman Taylor Snyder followed with a double into center before Willie Abreu drove in two with a base hit to right that made it 2-1 Tourists with one swing of the bat.
Asheville added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Nevin reached first on an error by Oswaldo Cabrera at third. Snyder hit his second double of the game to score Nevin before Abreu drove in his third of the game with a single to right to stretch the Tourists' lead to 4-1.
Charleston inched closer in the bottom of the seventh after Florial's solo fly made it a two-run game. Oswaldo Cabrera started off the inning with a lead of double. Castillo grounded out to short but advanced Cabrera up to third. With two outs Carlos Vidal singled to right field to drive in Cabrera and trim Asheville's lead to one.
Nick Green (1-3, 5.29) took the loss for the RiverDogs, but set a career high in innings pitched as he was kept in through five and two thirds. Phillip Diehl came in for relief and pitched two and one third solid innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Anyelo Gomez came in top of the ninth and struck out two.
Antonio Santos (1-2, 2.25) got his first win of the season for Asheville, throwing six solid innings and giving up only two runs.
Donny Sands and Cabrera each collected multi-hit games for Charleston. It was the first time the RiverDogs dropped three consecutive ballgames as the Tourists pulled even with them for fourth place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings, 2.5 back of first-place Rome.
Ballpark Fun
It was an MUSC family Sunday at the Joe as the RiverDogs also celebrated Charlies' birthday. The RiverDogs wore their specialty pinstriped Holy City uniforms on an evening of family fun. Members of the MUSC Health Kid's Club (12 and under) got in for free and were able to run the bases after the game.
