Legends Win 4-2, Take Three of Four in Columbia

Lexington starter Gerson Garabito pitched six shutout innings, and the Lexington Legends took a 4-2 win over the Columbia Fireflies Sunday in Columbia.

The Legends won three out of four in the series, including two shutouts. The Legends won 2-0 Thursday and 4-0 Saturday. The only runs scored by Columbia in the three Lexington wins came in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday.

The only Columbia win in the series was also a shutout, a 5-0 win by the Fireflies Friday night.

In Sunday's game, Chris DeVito's solo homer in the top of the fourth inning gave Lexington a 1-0 lead, and the Legends added three runs in the fifth. Nick Dini drew a leadoff walk and scored on Angelo Castellano's one-out double. After Ricky Aracena grounded out, Khalil Lee singled, scoring Castellano. Lee went to second on a wild pitch and came home on a triple by Gabriel Cancel.

Grant Gavin blanked the Fireflies in the seventh and eighth innings, and Walker Sheller retired the first two batters in the ninth before Columbia rallied. Jose Medina singled and moved to second on defensive indifference. Jay Jabs walked and Reed Gamache singled, scoring Medina with the first run for the Fireflies after 17 consecutive scoreless innings. Tim Tebow followed with a single that loaded the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Jabs to score, but Sheller struck out Milton Ramos with runners at second and third to end the game.

Garabito (2-1)got the win. He allowed two hits in six innings, a double by Michael Paez in the second inning and a double by Tebow in the fifth.

Columbia starter Blake Taylor (0-3) was the losing pitcher.

The Legends return home for seven games. They will open a three-game series against Augusta Monday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
