Spirit win second straight over Rox, 2-1
July 15, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
For the second game in as many nights, the North Shore Spirit and Brocton Rox battled through a low-scoring affair, and once again it was the Spirit who edged out the Rox for a one run victory, 2-1 at Fraser Field.
Both Chris Farley and Brad Guy held the respective offenses in check for much of the game, although the Spirit were able to get to Guy for 11 hits. The Spirit had seemingly solved the Rox hurler, but they couldn't come through with the big hits to break this game open.
The Spirit wasted their first prime scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second
inning. Andrew Wishy and Jeff Brooks came through with back-to-back singles and Jonathan deVries lofted a fly ball to center that sent Wishy tagging up for third base. With runners on the corners and just one out, Ryan Bethel popped to short and JD Reininger lifted a weak fly ball to right, ending the threat.
North Shore would finally get to Guy in the fourth. Wishy lined a one-out double into the right field corner and scored two batters later on an RBI single by deVries.
Brockton would pull even in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second and one out, Zach Strong's chopper was misplayed by Bethel allowing Francisco Lebron to cross the plate with the game-tying run.
North Shore repaid the Rox in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a Brockton error to push the go-ahead run across the plate. Vic Davilla got things started with a leadoff single. He moved into scoring position when Brockton third baseman Zach Strong misplayed a ball off the bat of Chris Rowan, and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Brooks.
That would close out the scoring in this contest as Farley and Fitzgerald combined to keep the Rox off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Farley earned his fifth victory of the season for the Spirit (5-2), while Fitzgerald added to his league-lead with his 10th save. Guy suffered the loss in the contest to drop to .500 (2-2) for the year.
Brockton and North Shore will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at Fraser Field. Jared Trout (2-1) gets the start for the Spirit, while the Rox will send former Spirit ace John Kelly (5-2) to the mound. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
