Brockton Rox News Release
LYNN, MA -- RHP Brad Guy allowed just one earned run in seven innings but the Brockton Rox offense provided little run support, and the North Shore Spirit capitalized on a Rox error in the sixth frame to beat the Rox 2-1 at Fraser Field in Lynn, MA. The Rox have dropped the first two games of the series and five straight overall, their longest losing streak of the season. SS Mike Scanzano was the only player with more than one hit for Brockton, as the Rox have scored just three runs on 13 hits in the series. Spirit RHP Chris Farley earned the win with 8.1 innings on the hil for North Shore, while RHP Kevin Fitzgerald earned his second save in as many nights. The Rox and Spirit play the final game of the three-game set tomorrow at 2:05 PM.
After three and a half scoreless innings, North Shore broke through in the fourth frame. With two outs, backup C Jonathan DeVries ripped a single through the left side to score RF Andrew Wishy with the game's first run. Brockton scored an unearned run against Farley in the fifth. Farley retired the first 12 batters he faced, but gave up singles to 1B Francisco Lebron and C Jason Radwan on back-to-back pitches in the fifth. Later in the frame, 3B Zach Strong hit a bouncer towards second that took a bad hop and hit off North Shore 2B Ryan Bethel's glove, deflecting into right field and allowing Lebron to score.
In the sixth inning, the tables turned on the Rox and an error cost Guy a run. Strong misplayed a groundball to put runners at first and second. While Guy forced Wishy to bounce into a double play one batter later, 1B Jeff Brooks drove a single through the left side to give North Shore the lead. Brooks finished the game 3-4. In the ninth, Scanzano singled to lead off the frame, but after DH Guye Senjem flied out, Spirit Manager John Kennedy summoned Fitzgerald from the pen. He took just one pitch to get a double-play groundout to end the game. RHP John Kelly (5-2, 3.09 ERA) tries to break the losing streak for the Rox tomorrow afternoon in Lynn, MA against Spirit RHP Jared Trout (2-1, 2.43 ERA).
