Spirit take second straight over Skyhawks

North Shore Spirit News Release

A tightly contest for much of the affair, the Spirit broke things open with a three-run sixth inning and surged to their second straight win over the Skyhawks, 6-3, on Saturday night at the new Fraser Field.

Sussex jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. After leadoff-man James Cooper walked and stole second, Dick Daly drove home his 41st run of the season with an RBI single. Jeremy Booth would drive home Daly one batter later with a line drive basehit to center.

The Spirit answered with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning. After a Rob Fischer single and a Vic Davilla walk put runners on first and second with no outs, Chris Rowan smashed an RBI single to left. Alex Trezza followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Davilla with the game-tying run.

North Shore would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a BJ Weed RBI base hit.

The Spirit would break game open in the sixth. Ryan Bethel and Weed each came through with clutch two-out RBI singles to extend the North Shore lead to 6-2.

The Skyhawks would push across an unearned run in the eighth, but that's as close as they would get.

Matt Bishop (2-1) went seven full innings allowing just two runs on six hits to earn the victory for the Spirit. Kevin Fitzgerald pitched the ninth to record his league leading 15th save of the season. Skyhawks starter Brian Ford suffered the loss.

The Spirit will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon when the series concludes at Fraser Field. Game time is set for 2:05 p.m.
