Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit played host to the Windsor Spitfires for the final meeting of the season. Thanks to multi-point performances from three different Spitfires, Windsor topped the Saginaw Spirit by a final score of 6-1.
In the first period, the Spits jumped to an early 1-0 lead as Christian Fischer sniped an unassisted goal at the 4:17 mark. The Spirit answered back on a five-on-three power play opportunity at 9:03 of the period. Mitchell Stephens' tied the game at one on his 20th goal of the season, extending his point streak to ten games. Matthew Kreis and Marcus Crawford picked up the helpers on the play. The 1-1 tie stood until Logan Brown pushed the Spits out in front at 14:14 of the first period. The Spirit and the Spitfires turned in an evenly contested first period, as Windsor only outshot Saginaw 9-7.
A parade of Spitfires and Spirit players flowed in and out of the penalty box in the second period. As the penalties accumulated, Saginaw's starting goaltender Brendan Bonello stood tall to keep Windsor from extending their lead. The Spitfires finally broke through at 17:08 of the second period, as Gabriel Vilardi found the back of the net to cushion the Spits' 3-1 lead. Despite the two-goal deficit, Saginaw outshot Windsor 10-7 in the second period.
Another penalty early in the third period eventually gave way to a three-goal advantage for the Spitfires. As the Spirit put their specialty teams to the ice once again, Gabriel Vilardi sought out his third point of the night as the Spits took a 4-1 lead. Windsor continued to put pressure on the Saginaw net as they secured two more goals from Hayden McCool and Mads Ellar en route to a 6-1 victory over the Saginaw Spirit. Final shots on goal favored the Windsor Spitfires, 25-20.
