Spirit Suffer 2-1 Loss to Knights

(London, ON) The Saginaw Spirit and the London Knights clashed at the John Labatt Centre Friday night, with the Knights beating the Spirit by a score of 2-1 in regulation. Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale posted 41 saves on 43 shots to earn the game's second star honors, and winger Michael Kantor scored the lone Spirit goal of the evening. The OHL Western Conference playoff race continues to warrant attention, with the Erie Otters earning a win Friday night to move past the Spirit in the standings. The Otters are now tied with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, who were idle Friday night, for the fifth place seed with 63 points. The Spirit are in seventh place with 62 points and a record of 28-24-4-2.

The Knights offense posted two goals in the first period for an early 2-0 advantage over the Spirit. Winger Colin Martin opened scoring with a goal at 15:11 from winger Chris DeSousa and defenseman Michael D'Orazio. London winger Stephen Sanza moved the score to 2-0 with a goal at the 18:42 mark to close out the period, courtesy assists from winger Garrett Hunter and winger Tyler Brown.

The Spirit broke the potential shutout late in the second period, scoring in the final minute to move the score to 2-1. Saginaw winger Michael Kantor tallied his fourth goal of the season at the 19:00 mark of the second, thanks to assists from defenseman Jordan Hill and center Barry Sanderson. The Spirit continued to battle the Knights into the third period, the Spirit effort being highlighted by its special teams unit killing three Knights power plays including a five-on-three situation. Despite the effort, the Knights secured the win by a score of 2-1 in regulation.

Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale earned 41 saves on 43 shots, while opposing goaltender Michael Hutchinson tallied 27 saves on 28 shots.
