July 5, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit recovered from a tough game-one loss to defeat the Jackals 7-2 in the second game, earning the split of the series-opening doubleheader with New Jersey on Tuesday night.
Greg Pleeter improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while Alan Webb dropped to 0-1. With the split the Spirit run their record to 21-17 on the season.
North Shore's offense got going early in the second game. Rob Fischer singled to get things started in the first inning and went from first to third on a base hit from Vic Davilla. Alex Trezza sent Fischer home with a sacrifice fly to put the Spirit ahead, 1-0.
The Spirit padded their lead with a five-run second inning. After back-to-back singles from Storey and Carter, Marcos Agramonte was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rob Fischer cleared the bases with a two-out, three run triple and then scored on Vic Davilla's two-run homer. With the extra-base hit, Fischer extended his hitting streak to 17-straight games.
The Spirit added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI double from Brian Macchi to make the score 7-0.
With North Shore forced to tap the bullpen in the early game, they needed a solid performance from starting pitcher Pleeter. The young right-hander didn't disappoint in his second start of the season. He held the Jackals scoreless through five innings and struck out six batters.
The Jackals made up some ground in the sixth inning with two runs off of Pleeter. The Jackals plated one a wild pitch and scored their second on an RBI groundout from Mike Rucci.
While the Spirit offense struggled to get anything across the plate in the first game, the bats came to life for game two. Steven Carter finished the game 3-3 with a double and a run scored, while Davilla wound up 2-3 with two RBI.
The first game of the doubleheader got away from the North Shore Spirit quickly, as they fell to the New Jersey Jackals 14-1.
The Jackals sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning of play, coming away with nine runs on eight hits.
Jake Mullis (2-2) suffered the loss for the Spirit while Joe Orloski picked up his third victory of the season.
