Cutters Begin Long Homestand With Win

New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters started their longest homestand of the season (12 games over the next 13 days) in style on Tuesday night, battering the Elmira Pioneers 9-3. It was a game in which the three main facets of baseball- hitting, fielding and pitching- all came together for the Cutters and there was little the Pioneers could do to slow them down.
Already ahead 2-1 thanks to a Derrick Gibson two-run line drive home run, the Cutters pushed the lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning. The first five batters of the frame reached base and eventually scored. Gibson, Bill Peavey, Nick Hiter and Keith Stegbauer all picked up RBIs during the inning.
New Haven County starting pitcher Tim Keinath was the beneficiary of the generous run support provided by the offense, as he went seven innings on route to his first victory of the year. Gibson's blast alone would have been enough for the dominant Keinath though, who only allowed one run during his outing, a solo home run to Elmira catcher Onix Mercado in the top of the third.
The victory is the Cutters third in succession, matching their longest winning streak of the year. Gibson was once again the hitting star for the Cutters, going 3 for 5, scoring twice and driving in three runners. Mike O'Keefe, Chas Terni, Peavey and Stegbauer each had multiple hits.
Elmira's runs all came via the longball. Das Jesson added his own two-run home run off reliever Nick Rowland in the eighth to go along with Mercado's earlier blast, but it was the only trouble Rowland encountered in his two innings of work.
The Cutters will try to push their winning streak to four on Wednesday when the host the Pioneers in the second game of their three-game set. Jarrett Stawarz makes his second start of the season for New Haven County, while Elmira sends Jose Guzman to the mound.
