Back-to-back-to-back homers, starting with a grand slam by RF Darren Ciraco, led to a nine-run first inning and a 14-1 win for New Jersey in Game 1 of a doubleheader against North Shore. Ciraco's slam was followed by solo shots from LF Steve Checksfield and SS Chris Rowan. 1B John Lindsey's three-run homer in the third made it 12-1, Jackals. C Sandy Madera hit a two-run shot in the fourth that made it 14-1 and capped the scoring, mercifully. Madera finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Ciraco finished 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs. Joe Orloski pitched the full seven innings for New Jersey, allowing just a run on six hits to get his third win.

North Shore got payback for Game 1's drubbing, winning Game 2 against New Jersey 7-2. Vic Davilla homered for the ninth time this season, a two-run shot in the second. Gregg Pleeter held New Jersey's offense to two runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings. CF Rob Fischer was 1-for-3 with a triple, driving in three. New Jersey moves to within two games of South Division leader Worcester with the win.
NEW HAVEN 9, ELMIRA 3 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:57 ATT: 905 W: Tim Keinath (1-3) L: Glen Keeton (3-1) S: None HR: ELM - Das Jesson (3), Onix Mercado (2) NHC - Derrick Gibson (6)
A two-run single by 3B Keith Stegbauer capped a five-run fifth inning that propelled New Haven to a 9-3 win over the Pioneers. RF Derrick Gibson was 3-for-5 for the Cutters, with a homer and three driven in. SS Chas Terni was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Starter Tim Keinath had a good outing for New Haven, holding Elmira to just a run on six hits over seven innings. Reliever Nick Rowland surrendered the other two runs, both on a solo homer to Pioneers' SS Das Jesson in the eighth.
QUEBEC 6, BROCKTON 5 @ Quebec City, Que. Time: 3:10 ATT: 2,786 W: Christian Mendoza (1-1) L: Joey Cole (4-2) S: None HR: QUE - Todd Leathers (11)
Quebec appeared headed for their fifth straight loss, trailing 5-2 after four innings, but 1B Todd Leathers homered and doubled, driving in four, to bring Quebec back for a 6-5 win. Leathers' two-run double with one out in the bottom of the ninth made it 6-5 and ended the game. Christian Mendoza got the win for Quebec, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in relief. The Rox jumped out early with a four-run third, but only mustered a run the rest of the way, thanks to manager- and new pitcher- Michel Laplante. Laplante put himself in for five innings, allowing just a run on four hits, while striking out seven.
GRAYS 3, WORCESTER 2 Gm 1 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 1:54 W: Jodie Kennedy (3-2) L: Reid Willett (4-2) S: Randy Rapp (6) HR: GRY - Mark Burke (5)
RF Mark Burke's RBI double in the first and solo homer in the fourth doomed Worcester to a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Grays in Game 1 of a doubleheader. 1B Francisco Lebron had a pair of doubles for the Grays. Jodie Kennedy was solid for, pitching six innings and yielding just two runs on six hits. Randy Rapp pitched a scoreless seventh for his sixth save.
GRAYS 5, WORCESTER 1 Gm 2 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 1:46 ATT: 2,007 W: Mike Weckenman L: Chris Shank (0-2) Save: None HR: GRY - BJ Weed (2)
The Grays finished what they started, sweeping the doubleheader against Worcester by winning Game 2 5-1. BJ Weed's three-run homer in the third capped a five-run rally, and starter Mike Weckenman stifled the Tornadoes' offense. Weckenman allowed just an unearned run on six hits over six innings to get his first win. Worcester now holds just a two-game lead over New Jersey in the South Division.
