
Spirit Shutout Bulls 7-0, Clinch Playoff Spot

(Belleville, ON) The Saginaw Spirit broke the Belleville Bulls 9 game win streak with a 7-0 shutout victory in Belleville Saturday night. Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels tallied his second career shutout in the effort, turning back 39 shots, while defenseman Andrew Hotham earned three points for the second consecutive game. Saginaw has outscored the opposition 23-2 in the last three games. The 32-19-0-2 Spirit gain two points in the win for a total of 66 points, good for second place in the OHL West Division; the Plymouth Whalers are in first place with 77 points. The Spirit clinch a playoff spot with the win.
The Spirit came out firing in the first period with three unanswered goals. Winger Patrick Asselin tallied the first goal of the evening at 9:45 in the first, assisted by center Cody Bass (OTT 05) and winger Ryan Berard. Winger Tomas Zaborsky (NYR 06), assisted by wingers Jan Mursak (DET 06) and Jack Combs, advanced Saginaw's lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at the 13:27 mark. Center Ryan McDonough tallied a goal :25 seconds later to move the score to 3-0; d-man Andrew Hotham and center Ryan O'Marra (NYI 05) assisted. The Spirit offense chased the starting opposing goaltender from net in the first period of play for the second consecutive night. Bulls' goalie Edward Pasquale came in for starter Kevin Lalande.
Saginaw's scoring momentum carried into the second period. Zaborsky notched his second goal of the evening at 8:41 in the second, assisted by center Tyler Haskins and Hotham. The Spirit defense just finished killing a two minute five-on-three penalty in the final seconds of the period when center Tom Pyatt (NYR 05) fed the puck to Hotham for the Spirit's fifth consecutive goal of the evening taking the score to 5-0.
The third period saw the Spirit offense score two more goals. Saginaw's Bass scored at 13:24 in the third, assisted by Asselin. McDonough tallied his second goal of the evening in the final seconds of the game to move the score to 7-0. McDonough's goal came at 19:40 in the third and saw an assist from D-man Nigel Williams.
Spirit goalie Ryan Daniels (OTT 06) had 39 saves in the shutout win.
