
Spirit remain undefeated, beating Whalers 6-1

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Plymouth Whalers 6-1 at their home opener Thursday night at TheDow Event Center. Center Ivan Telegin scored two goals, with winger Jordan Skellett adding one goal and two assists in the effort. Goalie Anthony Peters finished the game with 16 saves. The Spirit will return home on Saturday, September 26; the puck drops at 7:11 PM. The team goes into the weekend with six points and a record of 3-0-0-0.
Center Ivan Telegin put the Spirit on the board at 10:50 in the first period with the first goal of the game, which was assisted by winger Jordan Szwarz(NHL Phoenix Coyotes)and defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL Calgary Flames). Brodie kept the fire alive with another goal at 16:16 in the period. Center Barry Sanderson and winger Jordan Skellett assisted on the goal. The first period ended with the Spirit ahead, 2-0.
The Spirit continued to lead with back-to-back goals in the second period. Telegin paved the way with an unassisted goal 34 seconds into the period. Center Vincent Trocheck followed suit with a power play goal at the 5:41 mark and was assisted by defenseman Joe Underwood and winger Jordan Szwarz. Skellett tallied another goal for the Spirit, finding the net at 6:51 in the period. Assists were credited to defenseman Alex Lepkowski and winger Garret Ross. The Spirit remained in the lead, 5-0.
The Whalers scored their first goal of the game at 4:32 into the third period. Winger A.J. Jenks (NHL Florida Panthers) found the net with assists from center Tyler Sequin and winger Tyler J. Brown. The Spirit fought back as winger Josh Shalla notched a goal at the 9:32 mark. Assisting on the play were winger Jordan Skellett and defenseman Nick Trecapelli. The Spirit took the win with a final score of 6-1.
Spirit goalie Anthony Peters posted 22 saves on 27 shots. Whalers netminder Matt Hackett finished the game with 9 saves, while Scott Wedgewood posted 12 saves on a combined total of 23 shots.
