Saginaw Spirit News Release

(Owen Sound, ON) The Saginaw Spirit lost to the Owen Sound Attack 4-2 Wednesday night, outshooting their opponents 46-36. The game marked Saginaw's third contest in the last five days, with two more this upcoming weekend against the Sudbury Wolves and the Barrie Colts. The Spirit are in seventh place in the OHL Western Conference with 45 points and a record of 20-17-3-2. Saginaw is 2 points away from the Sarnia Sting, who are in sixth place with 47 points.

The Spirit opened the game in the first period and held a 1-0 lead into the second period. Rookie winger Jordan Szwarz tallied the goal, with assists coming from center Ryan McDonough and winger Joe Pleckaitis.

The Attack would answer in the second period with two consecutive goals. The first came from winger Chris MacKinnon at the 5:50 mark, assisted by winger Michael Farrell and defenseman Frankie Santini. Attack center Marcus Carroll would move the score to 2-1 Owen Sound with a goal at 13:41 in the second, assisted by MacKinnon and Farrell. The Spirit would respond moments later, when winger Chris Chappell tallied a power play goal at the 15:44 mark. Ryan McDonough assisted on the goal. The second period ended 2-2.

Owen Sound would re-take the lead in the third period. Defenseman Paul Bezzo scored a goal at 8:17 in the period, assisted by center Marc Franchini, to move the score to 3-2. Ironically, the puck was being ‘sling-shot' around the boards on its way around the back of the net when it instead bounced off the boards and into the net, catching all by surprise. Despite the bizarre nature of the goal, it provided the Attack what would become the game winning goal. The Spirit continued to battle the Attack in an effort to tie up the game, pulling goalie Edward Pasquale in the final minutes for an extra man. Despite the team's best efforts, Owen Sound's MacKinnon was able to break through for an empty net goal at the 18:51 mark. The insurance goal was assisted by center Joey Hishon and Santini.

Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale had 33 saves in tonight's game, while Attack goalie Tyler Beskorowany tallied 44 saves.
