Spirit Fall to Majors in 2-1 Shootout

(Mississauga, ON) The Saginaw Spirit lost to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in a 2-1 shootout Sunday afternoon. The lose snaps a seven game win streak when playing on the road, but the Spirit took a point in the effort for a total of 64 points and a record of 30-18-0-4. The Spirit, in third place in the OHL Western Conference, gained a two point edge over the fourth place Guelph Storm (62 points) this weekend.

The Spirit and Majors battled through a 1-1 tied regulation. Saginaw defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES) scored his fifth of the season with a power play marker at 7:57 in the first period, assisted by winger Jordan Szwarz and winger Chris Chappell. The Spirit retained the 1-0 lead until 4:21 in the second period when Mississauga defenseman Blake Parlett scored. Center Jared Gomes and center Casey Cizikas assisted on the game tying goal. Saginaw and Mississauga continued through the third period but neither team was able to break through the tie. The scoreless action carried the teams past a 4-on-4 five minute overtime and into a shootout.

Center Jordan Mayer started off the shootout but was stopped by Spirit goalie Anthony Peters. Spirit defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) followed but was also unable to score. Gomes broke onto the shootout score sheet with a goal, but Spirit center Jack Combs was unable to answer. Peters extended the shootout by stopping Majors center Michael Pelech in the opening salvo of the third round, but Mississauga secured the victory after Majors netminder Chris Carrozzi stopped Saginaw's Chappell.

Spirit netminder Anthony Peters posted 37 on 38 shots and Majors goalie Chris Carrozzi earned 28 saves on 29 shots.
