Majors Slide Past Spirit in Shootout Win

Mississauga ON - It was a close game this afternoon, as the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors played host to the Saginaw Spirit and came away with a 2-1 win in a shootout over the visitors. As a result, the Majors record moves to 28-22-1-2 on the season.

Saginaw's Nick Crawford scored 7:57 into the 1st period to get things started while Jordan Szwarz and Chris Chappell provided the passes.

Then, the Majors knotted the contest when Blake Parlett connected 4:21 into the 2nd period. Jared Gomes and Casey Cizikas got the assists.

There were no goals in the 3rd period, while Mississauga outshot the visitors by a count of 13-11 in the frame.

After a scoreless overtime period, Gomes got the only goal in the shootout to secure the victory for the Majors. Jordan Mayer and Mike Pelech were the other shooters for the home team (no goals), while T.J. Brodie, Jack Combs and Chappell were the shooters for Saginaw.

Chris Carrozzi got the start in net for the Majors and turned aside 28 shots, while Anthony Peters made 37 saves for the Spirit. Mississauga went 0 for 4 on the power-play, while Saginaw closed out 1 for 7. The game's three stars were Gomes (1st), Carrozzi (2nd) and Comrie (3rd).

Mississauga visits the Kitchener Rangers this Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. They return home this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. to present Paint The Rink Pink in partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for the second consecutive season when they host the Barrie Colts. Proceeds from tickets, sales and in-arena donations of that night will go toward the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Highlights of the evening will include an on-ice pre-game ceremony with Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Don Cherry. There wil be pink jerseys worn by Majors players, a silent auction in the week following the game, pink paraphernalia and of course, pink ice. The Majors Family Day game takes place on Monday, February 16 when the Brampton Battalion visits the Hershey Centre at 1 p.m. It will also be Scouts Day at the game, as they celebrate Lord Baden Powell's birthday! Popular cartoon characters including Diego, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick will be available for a Meet and Greet with fans from 12-1 p.m., prior to the start of the game.
