Spirit Fall to Greyhounds 3-1 at The Dow Event Center

The Saginaw Spirit took the ice against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for some Friday night hockey at the Dow Event Center. The teams met for the sixth time this season, with the Spirit falling to the Greyhounds 3-1.

The Spirit and Greyhounds saw a goalless first period, but it was not to say that it was uneventful. The teams traded penalties, turning in a physical period for the Friday night Spirit crowd. Sault Ste. Marie saw multiple scoring opportunities, but could not put the puck past Saginaw's recent trade subject and starting goaltender Evan Cormier. The teams headed to the locker room after 20 minutes of play with no tallies on the board and shots favoring Sault Ste. Marie 16-8.

The Greyhounds opened the game's scoring on an early second period goal by Keigan Goetz. The goal came at the 4:27 mark and allowed Sault Ste. Marie to take a 1-0 lead over Saginaw. Assists on the play were credited to Zach Senyshyn and Timmy Gettinger. The Spirit fought hard to tie the game after Goetz's goal but were unable to beat Sault Ste. Marie's starting goaltender Brandon Halverson. The Greyhounds were able to net another goal before the end of the second period and put Sault Ste. Marie up 2-0 against the Spirit. Michael Bunting netted the second goal for the Greyhounds at 15:30 of the period with the help of Connor Boland and Darnell Nurse. Shots on goal for the second period read Saginaw 12, Sault Ste. Marie 11.

The Spirit fought hard to catch up to the Greyhounds in the third period, but were unable to find the back of the net early and pull ahead of Sault Ste. Marie. Michael Bunting put home the Greyhounds third goal of the evening and made it a 3-0 game 8:00 into the third period. Assists on the play went to Sergey Tolchinsky and Gustav Bouramman. The Spirit eventually put a tally on the board midway through the last period of play when Mitchell Stephens notched his 15th goal of the season. Jacob Ringuette and Dylan Sadowy were credited with the assists on play. The teams ended the night with Sault Ste. Marie ahead of Saginaw 3-1 and final shots on goal favoring the Greyhounds 36-34.

The Saginaw Spirit will host the North Bay Battalion at the Dow Event Center on Saturday, January 10th for Star Wars Night. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:11 p.m.
