Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit (24-11-0-1) lost to the Oshawa Generals (17-15-3-1) by a score of 5-1 on Sunday, January 7th, at the Dow Event Center. Calem Mangone was the sole goal scorer for Saginaw with assists coming from Zayne Parekh and Joey Willis. Andrew Oke started in net for the Spirit making 4 saves on 7 shots on goal before being replaced by Nolan Lalonde after 20 minutes (10 saves on 12 shots). Jacob Oster started in net for the Generals making 35 saves on 36 shots on goal.
Just 1:25 into the first period, the Generals scored the first goal of the game. Luke Torrance skated deep into Spirit territory before he dumped the puck behind him to Dylan Roobroeck. He dropped a pass to Beckett Sennecke, whose quick shot between the legs of Oke made it 1-0.
With Liam Storch in the penalty box for slashing, Oshawa converted on a Connor Lockhart powerplay goal. Luca Marrelli and Stuart Rolofs picked up assists on the one-timer that proved to be the game winning tally.
Luca D'Amato added to the score late in the opening period, firing a point shot past Andrew Oke's right shoulder as Ethan Hay (interference) emerged from the Spirit penalty box. Beckett Sennecke picked up the lone assist on D'Amato's eight of the year.
The first period ended with Oshawa leading 3-0, but Saginaw managed to outshoot the Generals 12-7. Nolan Lalonde also came in, replacing Andrew Oke to start the second period.
With only 2:28 left in the second period, the Saginaw Spirit were finally able to get on the scoreboard. Joey Willis made a short pass to Zayne Parekh, whose point shot was tipped by Calem Mangone between Oster's legs for the 3-1 score.
Oshawa led 3-1 over the Saginaw to end the second period but the Spirit continued to outshoot the Generals, 25-12 (13-5 in the second period).
With 5:24 left in the game, Connor Lockhart wrapped behind Saginaw's goal to then pass to Stuart Rolofs, who sat only a foot in front of the right faceoff dot. Rolofs then rifled the puck right over Nolan Lalonde's shoulder for the 4-1 lead.
Calum Ritchie added a powerplay goal with Will Bishop in the box for tripping for the game's final tally.
The Saginaw Spirit fell to the Oshawa Generals 5-1 with Saginaw outshooting them 36-19 (11-7 in the third period).
Saginaw's next game will be against the Windsor Spitfires at the WFCU Centre on Wednesday, January 10th. Puck drop is at 7:05 pm.
