Saginaw, Mich.- The Saginaw Spirit (24-10-0-1) take on the Oshawa Generals (16-15-3-1) on Sunday, January 7th at the Dow Event Center.

The Saginaw Spirit hosted the Peterborough Petes, the reigning OHL champions, on Saturday, January 6th. Ethan Hay and Calem Mangone scored the first two goals of the game to give Saginaw a 2-0 lead to end the first. Peterborough's Chase Lefebvre scored the first goal for the Petes 7 minutes into the second but Zayne Parekh answered with a goal of his own to make it 3-1. Quinton Pagé then scored another goal for Peterborough but Nic Sima and Braden Haché responded, scoring two more goals for the Spirit, making it 5-2 at the end of the second. Zayne Parekh scored the final goal of the game to give Saginaw a 6-2 victory. Nolan Lalonde stopped 19 of 21 Peterborough shots for his eighth straight win.

The Oshawa Generals traveled across the border to take on the Flint Firebirds at the Dort Financial Center on Saturday, January 6th. Connor Lockhart scored the first goal just 26 seconds into the game, followed by a Luca D'Amato goal in the first as well. Stuart Rolofs, Matthew Buckley and Ethan Toms all scored goals within the first 3 minutes of the second, giving Oshawa a commanding 5-0 lead over Flint. Tristan Bertucci then scored the first goal of the night for the Firebirds but Stuart Rolofs and Connor Lockhart quickly scored their second goals of the night making it 7-1 after 40 minutes. Three more third period goals boosted the Generals to the 10-2 final, including Lockhart's hat trick tally. Calm Ritchie finished the night with five assists, and Jacob Oster posted a stellar 32 save performance.

Last Matchup:

The Saginaw Spirit faced off with the Oshawa Generals earlier this year on Friday, October 13th at Tribute Communities Centre. The Generals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead ending the first period with Thomas Stewart and Luca Marrelli scoring the two goals. Former Spirit forward Valentin Zhugin then scored two goals to tie the game 2-2. However, Oshawa's Luca D'Amato broke the tie making it 3-2 to end the second period. Nikita Tarasevich and Matthew Buckley then scored two goals to start the third. Zhugin would complete the hat trick later in the period and Calem Mangone brought the Spirit to within one. Rasmus Kumpulainen's empty netter would seal the deal for Oshawa later on, 6-4. Nolan Lalonde started in net for Saginaw making 26 saves on 30 shots on goal. Jacob Oster started for Oshawa, stopping 40 of 44.

Players to Watch:

After a four-point performance last night, Zayne Parekh leads the Spirit in points (49), amassing 15 goals and 34 assists. This places him second among all OHL defensemen in points and tied for second in assists and goals. Michael Misa leads the Spirit in goals (17) and powerplay goals (7). Andrew Oke leads in all major goaltending categories for the Spirit, including a 2.87 goals against average (GAA), a .895 save percentage (SV%), and 15 wins.

The Oshawa Generals are led by Connor Lockhart who leads the team in points (32) and goals (18). Luca Marrelli leads the Generals in assists (26). Jacob Oster leads in all major goaltending categories, including a 3.09 GAA, .902 SV%, and 14 wins. Oster also has one shutout win.

Saginaw currently has eight (8) players tied to the National Hockey League (NHL), including Joey Willis (Nashville), Josh Bloom (Vancouver), Matyas Sapovaliv (Vegas), Hunter Haight (Minnesota), Ethan Hay (Tampa Bay), Braden Haché (Florida), Rodwin Dionicio (Anaheim) and Nolan Lalonde (Columbus, FA).
