Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires got into Niagara at 1:30am this morning as they travelled out of Erie with a point after a loss in a shootout to the Otters. The Spitfires have collected points in their last six games and will be looking to move up the standings with a win in Niagara. The IceDogs had other plans as they grounded the Spitfires and took this one 5-2.
In the first period, the IceDogs would jump on top first just 5:04 into the frame. Levin buried it off a faceoff in a set play in the Spitfires zone. Both teams were successful on the penalty kill throughout the period. The shots were 16-11 in favour of Niagara after the first period.
In the second period, the IceDogs would strike just 1:41 into the period to take a 2-0 lead. Six and a half minutes later, the IceDogs would extend their lead as they capitalized on a turnover behind the Spitfires net and went up 3-0. Late in the frame, the Spitfires would score on a powerplay. Greentree scored his 23rd from Zhugin and Peer to make it a 3-1 deficit. After 40 minutes the shots were 28-26 in favour of the IceDogs.
In the third period, the Spitfires dominated the play and puck possession but could not buy a goal for a good while. They finally broke through as Abraham fed Eichler in front and he scored his 2nd in as many games and it was a 3-2 game. Just 29 seconds later, the IceDogs would respond and restore their 2 goal lead to 4-2. Five minutes later, the IceDogs would score again and take a 5-2 lead. That would do it as the Spitfires ran out of gas and took the loss in Niagara.
The Spitfires are back in action on Wednesday when the Saginaw Spirit come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
