North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon as they fell to the New Haven County Cutters 10-5.
Rolando Valles (6-5) picked up the win for New Haven. Over 7 2/3 innings, Valles allowed five runs on eleven hits, while striking out three. North Shore starter Bryan Morse (8-4) was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs over just 2 2/3 innings.
New Haven jumped out to the early lead in the second. After a Chas Terni single, Doug Vroman laced an RBI double to the wall in right. Matt Hackney followed with a base hit that plated Vroman, putting the Cutters in front 2-0.
Things went from bad to worse for Morse in the third. New Haven would send ten men to the plate in the inning, collecting six hits and scoring four times. Chris Gaskin and Chas Terni each chipped in RBI singles for the Cutters.
New Haven would tack on an insurance run in the eighth. Hackney's two-out RBI basehit scored Terni, giving the Cutters a 7-0 lead.
The North Shore offense sprung to life in the bottom of the eighth. BJ Weed broke up Valles shutout bid with a solo homerun, his 5th of the season. After singles by Vic Davilla and Rob Fischer put runners on the corners, Alex Trezza picked up his 31st RBI of the season with sacrifice fly to center. The Spirit would add three more runs in the inning thanks to an Andrew Wishy RBI single and a run-scoring triple off the bat Luis Sabino.
After North Shore had narrowed the gap to 7-5, the Cutters responded with a three spot in the ninth. Shortstop Jeremy Terni crushed a Kevin Fitzgerald offering over the left field fence for a three-run homerun, giving New Haven a five-run cushion. That would close out the scoring as the Spirit bats failed to plate another run.
North Shore is off tomorrow but they will try to get back on track Friday when they kick off a three-game set with the Sussex Skyhawks at the new Fraser Field.
