Brockton Rox News Release
QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC - With the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the ninth inning, C Jason Radwan floated an RBI single to score SS Mike Scanzano and give Brockton the decisive run in a 4-3 victory over the Quebec Capitales on Wednesday night. Radwan and pinch-runner Joe Hough were both thrown out on the play, which amounted to an obscure double play for Quebec. However the Rox hung on to the one-run lead and with the victory pulled within one game of the Capitales for first place in the Can-Am League.
Quebec opened up the scoring with a three-run first inning against Rox starter RHP John Kelly who was searching for his league-best ninth win of the season. Kelly did not figure in the decision, but settled down and dueled with Capitales starter LHP Jason Pilkington who was making his first start of the season. Pilkington was nearly untouchable the first time through the Rox order as he struck out six batters. In the fourth inning though, the Rox broke through. Radwan hit an RBI double and three batters later, an RBI single off the bat of 2B Mike Torres tied the game at 3-3. The contest remained tied until the ninth inning.
RHP John Boker recorded his seventh win for Brockton. He relieved Kelly and pitched a scoreless eighth inning to set up the Rox ninth inning rally. RHP Jon Koch came on to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth. He allowed a two-out single to SS Willie James, but James was thrown out by Radwan as he tried to steal second base for the final out of the game. It was Koch's second save in as many nights and his 12th of the year.
In the regular season series finale on Thursday night, the Rox send RHP Wayne Lundgren (1-3, 3.86 ERA) to make his first start of the season. Brockton searches for its third series sweep against Quebec in 2006, and second of the season at Le Stade Municipal. This season, the Rox are 11-2 against the Capitales. Lundgren will be opposed by RHP Gabe Ribas (7-2, 2.32 ERA). Thursday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 in Quebec.
