Spirit defeat Sussex, 9-3

The North Shore Spirit (23-19) took over first place in the CANAM league standings Monday night with a 9-3 win over the Sussex Skyhawks (23-20). The Spirit holds a percentage point's lead over a slew of teams as the first-half comes to thrilling conclusion.

North Shore jumped out to the early lead in the first. Garrett Weir led off with a line drive double into the left field corner. Two batters later, Vic Davilla picked up his league-leading 35th RBI of the season with a groundout that plated Weir with the game's first run.

The Spirit continued the offensive attack in the second. A double by Alex Trezza, a walk to Ryan Bethel and a single by JD Reininger loaded the bases with one out. Weir then smashed a Derek Hawk offering into the right center field gap for a bases clearing triple, giving the Spirit a quick 4-0 lead.

Sussex pushed across an unearned run in fourth. Darin Kinsolving picked up an RBI with a groundout that scored Bobby Lenoir with the Skyhawks first run of the night.

North Shore would regain the momentum in the bottom half of the frame. Bethel led off with a walk and moved to second on Weir's third hit of the game. Weed then punched a roller through the ride side, scoring Bethel with the Spirit's fifth run. After a Vic Davilla walk loaded the bases, Chris Rowan lofted a sacrifice fly to right, giving North Shore the 6-1 advantage.

The Skyhawks would get to Lavergne in the fifth. The first four Sussex batters reached forcing John Kennedy to make a call to the bullpen. Despite entering to a bases-loaded, no outs situation, Dennis Robinson managed to wiggle his way out of trouble thanks to a pop out and strikeout. Halfway through the ballgame, the Spirit still held a slim 6-3 lead.

Andrew Wishy would provided some breathing room in the bottom the sixth with a two-out, two-run single to left.

Alex Trezza put the finishing touch on the North Shore victory with his 7th long ball of the season, a solo-shot deep over the right field fence.

Robinson (2-4) picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief. Hawk suffered the loss, allowing seven runs over 5 1/3.

The Spirit and the Skyhawks continue their three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
