Spirit complete series sweep
July 26, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
Making his first start of the season in a Spirit uniform, Shaun McNamara his first career victory as the Spirit defeated the Pride 6-3 on Wednesday night to complete the series sweep.
After struggling to put runs on the board early in the contest, North Shore broke through with three runs in the fourth inning. Davilla led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position when Chris Rowan was hit by a pitch. Andrew Wishy laced a single to score Davilla for the Spirit's first run and took second on the throw. With two men in scoring position and two out in the inning, Alex Trezza sent a two-run single to left, but was cut down trying to stretch the play in the double. Despite the abrupt ending, the Spirit nonetheless finished the inning with a three-run lead.
The advantage would be short-lived, however, as Nashua evened the score the very next inning. After Mark Hamilton and Bryan Duplissie reached on back-to-back singles to open the inning, Billy Becher lofted a three-run home run over the right field wall to tie the game at three.
North Shore reclaimed its lead in the home half of the inning, courtesy of a two-run double off the bat of Ryan Bethel. Luis Sabino started the scoring spree with a double, and Jon deVries followed with a walk. Bethel came through with the big hit, though crushing a double to straightaway center to put the Spirit back in control.
Davilla padded the Spirit lead in the eighth inning with a towering home run over the right-field wall.
McNamara allowed just three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings to earn the victory for the Spirit (1-0). Fitzgerald pitched himself into some trouble in the ninth, but he escaped from the jam without allowing a run for his league-leading 13th save. Pride starter Dan Reichert suffered the loss, surrendering five runs in six innings to remain winless on the road (5-4) in 2006.
Chris Farley gets the start Thursday night when the Spirit open a four-game set with the Quebec Capitales at the New Fraser Field. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
Prior to Thursday's contest, the Spirit will pay tribute to two local legends. Johnny Pesky will be on hand to watch the Spirit honor the number 6 that both he and Harry Agganis sported during their baseball careers.
