New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ The Jackals had no problem recording the first two outs of innings. It was the third out that was the problem. Quebec was clutch, scoring four of their six runs with two outs, as they toppled the Jackals 6-0.
Early on, the Jackals seemed have the number of Quebec starter Gabe Ribas. They had chances in the first and second inning to score runs, but failed to do so. In the first, Jason Tuttle stood aboard third base with only one out, but the middle of the lineup failed to bring him in. During the second inning, the Jackals had Tuttle on second, and Zack Smithlin on third, with only one out, and again failed to score again.
Jackals starter James Mondesir cruised through his first three innings of work, until Quebec's Nestor Smith scorched a double into the right-center field, allowing Dany Scalabrini to score.
But the sixth inning would be a disaster for Mondesir and the Jackals. After recording a double play, Mondesir had a chance to get out of the inning, and keep the New Jersey deficit at one run, but Geoffrey Tomlinson had different plans. He hit a hot shot to first base that deflected off the glove of Bill Peavey and rolled into the right field corner. Tomlinson raced into third base, setting the table for Eddie Lantigua and Smith. The two smacked back-to-back RBI double to extend the Quebec lead to 3-0.
Les Capitales added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh against Adam Nikolic., with their fourth two-out, RBI hit. Dany Scalabrini singled, scoring Simon Legare, making it a 4-0 Quebec advantage.
New Jersey reliever Willy Espinal imploded in the eighth, as Quebec turned a close contest into a blowout. Three consecutive singles led off the inning. Espinal then plunked Olivier Lepine with the bases loaded, scoring a run, and Smith scored on a wild pitch to end the Quebec scoring.
Jackals starter James Mondesir pitched his longest outing of 2006. He lasted 5.2 innings, while allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. He
After a rocky first three innings, Gabe Ribas settled in for Quebec. After the third innings, he allowed only two more hits. In seven innings, he blanked the Jackals, surrendered only four hits, while walking three and striking out six.
New Jersey ended the three game series with only four runs scored, and 14 hits.
