Saginaw Spirit News Release

SAGINAW, MI - On Friday, the Saginaw Spirit announced the acquisition of forward Matthew Kreis (KRICE) from the Barrie Colts in exchange for the third and sixth round picks in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection Draft and a third round pick in the 2017 draft.

Kreis, 17, has played in over 100 Ontario Hockey League games with the Barrie Colts, who selected him in the first round of the 2013 Priority Selection Draft. The native of Georgetown, Ontario participated in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in his rookie OHL campaign in 2013-14. Kreis has already participated in 19 playoff games in his two-year OHL career, adding some veteran leadership to one of the youngest lineups in the league.

"I am really excited for a fresh start in Saginaw. I could not be happier to be here and to know that Drinks (Spirit GM Dave Drinkill) still believes in me and what I can bring to the team." said the Spirit's newest member.

General Manager Dave Drinkill had high marks for the player he drafted in the first round of the 2013 OHL Priority Selection Draft.

"I believe this is a good deal for both teams, I am very familiar with Matthew having drafted him back in 2013 and what he can do as a hockey player. I think a fresh start is needed and we fully expect Matthew to come into Saginaw and be a key player for us as we strive to win the OHL championship. He is a very skilled player with a lot of speed and will be a tremendous asset to the forward group we already have assembled with the Spirit. The end goal for everyone in the organization from top to bottom is winning the Memorial Cup and I know Matthew shares this same aspiration."

Kreis will join the Spirit for Training Camp this coming week at the Dow Event Center. Monday and Tuesday's on-ice scrimmages are open and free to the public. For more information, call (989) 497-7747 or go to www.saginawspirit.com.
