
Spinners Score Late, Beat IronBirds 9-4

Aberdeen, MD - For seven innings, the IronBirds and Spinners played a close game. But Lowell scored six runs over the final two innings to take the rubber match from Aberdeen, 9-4.
Aberdeen struck for the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the second. Wynston Sawyer hit a one out single, and then Connor Narron batted him home by lining a double to left-center field, giving the IronBirds a 1-0 lead.
Lowell took the lead in the top of the third. Seth Schwindenhammer led off the inning with a home run to deep center field. Jayson Hernandez, Drew Turocy, and Keury De La Cruz then hit back-to-back-to-back singles. Hernandez and Turocy scored, giving the Spinners a 3-1 lead after three innings.
Aberdeen would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Mychal Givens led off by reaching on an error and Connor Narron worked a two out walk. Chris Clinton hit an RBI single, which scored Givens. Narron came in on an Austin Knight RBI single, knotting the score at three a piece.
The IronBirds took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Glynn Davis walked with one out. Two batters later, Givens reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Davis to score.
Lowell took the lead back for good in the top of the eighth. De La Cruz hit a one out single, stole second, and advanced to third on a Sawyer throwing error. Garin Cecchini then walked. Travis Shaw hit an RBI single, scoring De La Cruz. Jason Thompson grounded to Joe Velleggia at first, but Devin Jones, covering the bag, could not handle the throw, allowing Cecchini to score on the error. Lowell led 5-4 after eight innings.
In the ninth, things got worse for the IronBirds. Hernandez worked a lead off walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a Turocy single. Jose Garcia hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hernandez, making it 6-4. Cecchini then hit a two run home run to right field, swelling the lead to 8-4. Travis Shaw completed the scoring when he followed Cecchini's home run with one of his own, making it 9-4 Spinners.
Jacob Cowan went six innings for Aberdeen and struck out 10 Spinners. He allowed three runs (all earned), four hits, and did not walk a single batter. Jason Garcia went five innings, allowed four hits, three runs (just one earned), two walks and struck out five.
Miguel Pena got the win for Lowell. He pitched three innings. He allowed only one hit, one run (earned), one walk, while striking out two IronBird hitters. Angel Cespedes took the loss, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned), walking one, and striking out three.
The IronBirds will board a bus tomorrow morning and travel to Tri-City to take on the Valley Cats in the opener of a three game series. First pitch is 7:00 p.m. David Baker (0-2, 3.20) will get the ball for Aberdeen. Tri-City will counter with Jonas Dufek (1-0, 3.86).
